What is BSF?

Black Soldier Fly

Hermetia Illucens

The remarkable insect transforming waste management

The Black Soldier Fly (BSF / Hermetia Illucens) is a species native to tropical and subtropical regions around the world. It is known for its ecological significance and its various applications have gained significant attention for their potential to promote sustainability and address a range of global challenges: resource depletion and environmental degradation, food waste, and climate change.

In a world where 40% of the food, on average, goes to landfills or into other waste streams, BSF provides an attractive solution to the problem. BSF can be fed onsite waste from other food processes, recycling organic waste into high-value end-products used by the same industries to produce other products, minimizing the use of new raw materials. It's a circular economy in action!

BSF larvae convert organic waste into fertilizer and are harvested as insect protein to replace unsustainable fish feed for aquaculture or crop-based animal feed for livestock. BSF are an excellent source of protein, fat, and minerals, and they are also high in vitamins and amino acids. BSF also has applications in aquaculture, pet food, human supplements, cosmetics, and fertilizers.

BSF Benefits

Sustainable Solution

BSF technology offers an eco-friendly approach to waste management and protein production

Composting Abilities

BSF larvae can process a wide range of organic waste, making them ideal for waste management and composting.

High Nutrition Content

The larvae contain up to 55%+ high-quality protein, rich in Omega 3, 6 and 9, making them a great source of animal protein.

Sustainability

Insects require less water, land, and energy to produce the same amount of feed as traditional protein sources.

Non Invasive

Black soldier flies are not invasive species and do not attack crops or disrupt local ecosystems. They are also not a disease vector.

Our Target Markets

Pet Food Market

Pet Food Market

BSF can be used in the pet food market as an alternative to traditional meat-based protein sources. Traditional pet food typically consists of rendered meat byproducts, grains, and fillers that often come from unsustainable sources, such as intensive livestock production.

Egyptian pet food market size: $50M with growing demand for premium, sustainable ingredients

Poultry Feed Market

Poultry Feed Market

The market growth is driven by the increasing demand for poultry meat products, the rising awareness of protein intake, and the expanding poultry production in Asia-Pacific and MENA regions.

2.3B chickens raised annually in Egypt, creating massive demand for sustainable protein sources

Aqua Feed Market

Aqua Feed Market

BSF protein is used in the aqua feed market as an alternative to traditional aqua feed such as fishmeal and soymeal because traditional aqua feed is unsustainable as fishmeal is made from wild-caught fish, which is a declining resource.

1.5M tons of fish produced annually in Egypt, requiring high-protein feed ingredients

Pharmaceutical Market

Pharmaceutical Market

BSF protein is a promising new ingredient for the pharmaceutical market as insect extracts like Chitosan, melanin, and probiotics can all be extracted from insect larvae and be useful in the pharmaceutical market.

  • High nutritional value for dietary supplements
  • Biocompatibility with low risk of allergic reactions
  • Antimicrobial properties for new antibiotics
  • Wound healing properties for medical products
Cosmetics Market

Cosmetics Market

BSF protein is an emerging ingredient in the cosmetics market with several unique properties that make it ideal for use in a variety of cosmetic products.

  • Moisturizing properties from amino acids that hydrate skin
  • Anti-aging properties from antioxidants in BSF larvae oil

Egyptian cosmetics market valued at $2.3B with growing demand for natural ingredients

Fertilizers Market

Fertilizers Market

The insect fertilizer market is a growing market for fertilizers made from insects or insect waste products. Insect fertilizers are an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional chemical fertilizers. They are also a good source of nutrients for plants, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

Global organic fertilizer market expected to reach $15.9B by 2027
